Joanna interviews Peter Simpson, Artistic Director of the 9th Annual Port Townsend Film Festival in Washington.  Peter was part of the organizing committee of film lovers who decided to form their own film festival modeled after the popular Telluride, CO festival.  In 1999, Rocky Friedman, a highly respected local film lover who restored and operates Washington’s only remaining nickelodeon, was joined by Jim Ewing, Jim Westall, Linda Marie Yakush, a five-person operating committee – that included Peter – and more than 200 volunteers to form the Port Townsend Film Festival, a grand community effort that celebrates great films and filmmakers.

9th ANNUAL PORT TOWNSEND FILM FESTIVAL ATTRACTS FILM LOVERS

“A film lover’s block party celebrating great films and filmmakers.”  That was the motto when in 1999 four film lovers decided to form the Port Townsend Film Festival.  This year, the 9th annual festival will be held September 26-28 at Port Townsend, Washington.

A highlight will be “A Very Special Evening with Piper Laurie.”  Laurie, an Oscar-nominated actress and a Golden Globe and Emmy winner, will be interviewed by Robert Osborne, host of Turner Classic Movies, following the screening of “The Hustler” on Saturday, September 27.  Previous guests include Tony Curtis, Patricia Neal, Peter Fonda and Elliott Gould.

Attendees can mingle with stars, converse with filmmakers during Q&A discussions, or just relax at the free family-friendly Taylor Street outdoor movies.  Independent, foreign, classic, and art-house narrative and documentary films will be shown, plus special programs, such as First Features, a showcase of four first feature-length narrative films by young filmmakers; talkmovies@thehospitalytent venue will have filmmakers’ panel discussions, and much more.  There will even be a strip show Saturday night in conjunction with one of the films.
